Happy Spring!  With the Easter season quickly approaching, it is important to keep in mind safe treat choices with braces and other orthodontic appliances.  Baked goods such as cookies, muffins, brownies and cupcakes are often good choices as long as hard candies and/or nuts are not present.  Other orthodontic-friendly Easter treats include chocolate bunnies, M&Ms, peanut butter cups, etc.  Fruits are a healthy and delicious snack as well!  Keep in mind that it is important to cut up apples and stick to soft fruits.  Smoothies are a great way to combine fruits and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Hard and chewy/sticky candy should be avoided.  Some examples are: jaw breakers, gobstoppers, caramel, jelly beans, gum, taffy and fruit snacks. These types of snacks can break brackets or bend wires, which can increase the length and cost of treatment.

A good rule of thumb is – if you’re not sure if a food is safe for your braces or orthodontic appliance, it is better to avoid it.  Feel free to ask Dr. Brown and her team at your next appointment if your favorite sweet treat is safe to indulge in during your orthodontic treatment!  And as always, be sure to brush and floss well after eating that Easter candy.
